WARWICKSHIRE Chief Constable Andy Parker has apologised to Andrew Mitchell over the Plebgate scandal.

Mr Parker appeared before a Home Affairs Select Committee (HASC) - together with the chief constables of West Mercia and West Midlands, David Shaw and Chris Sims - to explain their failure to discipline officers accused of trying to discredit the former Tory chief whip.

The three officers, Det Sgt Stuart Hinton (Warwickshire), Insp Ken MacKail (West Mercia) and Sgt Chris Jones (West Midlands) - acting on behalf of the Police Federation which represents rank-and-file officers - were accused of giving a false account of a meeting with Mr Mitchell.

Mr Parker said:"I would certainly like to apologise to Mr Mitchell because this added to the already big impact of the Plebgate campaign and it is embarrassing that my force was involved in the way it was."
